July 2017

You’re not alone!

Are you a caregiver to your aging parents? Do you feel overwhelmed with your caregiver responsibilities? You’re not alone. Every day, more than 65 million unpaid caregivers provide care to a loved one. But the caregiver role isn’t "one size fits all" – and if you’re going to balance your caregiver responsibilities with your professional and personal life, you’re going to need support.  That’s why we created The Modern Caregiver -- to celebrate the courageous, modern day caregivers and to provide helpful tips and resources that can make life a little easier.

Each month, we look forward to providing you with a closer look at the modern caregiver, including local and national caregiver resources – because you deserve all the support you can get during this demanding time in your life. In turn, we hope you’ll support our efforts of celebrating the millions of modern caregivers across the country by telling your friends and family about us.

In the meantime, please enjoy the July issue of The Modern Caregiver!

Who is the Modern Caregiver?

image Caregiving in the U.S. 2015, conducted by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, provides a national snapshot of family caregiving in the United States. The typical higher-hour caregiver (who provides unpaid care for at least 21 hours a week) has been caregiving for an average of 5-1/2 years and expects to continue care for another 5 years. Nearly half of these higher-hour caregivers report high emotional stress (46 percent).

With an average household income of $45,700, caregivers report not only emotional strain, but financial strain. Higher-hour caregivers report difficulty in finding affordable caregiving services, such as delivered meals, transportation, or in-home health services, in the community for them and their loved ones. Caregivers who live more than an hour away from their care recipient also report higher levels of financial strain (21 percent), perhaps because 4 out of 10 long-distance caregivers report the use of paid help (41 percent).40% to 70% of family caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression. » Read More

Draining the Swamp of Ageism.

imageToo often, we talk about older adults as a different group of people—separate from ourselves.

In reality, we're all aging, and we all will face similar issues and challenges as we grow older. And regardless of age, most of us want the same things—good health, economic security, and the ability to live independently. So, when we talk about what older adults want and need, it's more productive to frame it as a collective need for everyone in our society. » Read More
